The objective of this project was to take an essential, transitional element of the home and transform it into a piece of architectural art. The existing staircase received a dramatic overhaul, focusing on high-impact color contrast and meticulous millwork. This renewal effort was essential for aligning the home's vertical connector with the newly established modern interior aesthetic.

What We Changed

• Tread Refinishing: The stair treads were refinished or replaced with dark-stained hardwood, providing a rich, warm tone that contrasts beautifully with the white elements.

• Riser Brightening: The stair risers were painted a crisp, clean white, visually lightening the structure and making the staircase appear taller and more substantial.

• Newel Post and Balusters: The entire railing system was replaced or substantially upgraded. The large newel posts and balusters (spindles) were painted bright white, emphasizing their solid, square lines.

• Handrail Contrast: The handrail was finished in a dark stain, matching the treads. This high-contrast combination of dark wood and white paint is a classic modern design choice that defines the structure.

• Base Trim Work: New, wider white baseboards and trim were installed around the staircase walls, completing the clean, polished look.

• Wall Finish: The surrounding walls were updated with a light, neutral paint color, allowing the high-contrast staircase itself to become the main focal point.

Result

The newly renovated staircase now stands as a defining visual anchor within the home's entryway. The deliberate use of dramatic light-dark contrast between the rich hardwood and the sharp white paint creates depth and immediate visual appeal. Beyond aesthetics, the robust new construction and durable finishes ensure this feature is both high-end and highly functional, raising the perceived value and sophistication of the entire residence.
